The Jesuit. The Sonambulist. The Professor. The Phrenologist. The Convent Drop-out. The Acolyte. And Madame B.
No, this is not a costume party guest list. But this cast of characters will make a rightful Halloween appearance in Shapiro & Smith Dance’s “Notes From a Séance” at the Barbara Barker Center for Dance at 8pm October 31, November 1 and 2.
Consider this dance-theater work a modern-day exposé of a 19th century pop culture celebrity: the Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky. She rose to fame as part of the Spiritualist movement of the 1870s and claimed her travels took her to Tibet where she trained in the “Ancient Wisdom” she then passed on to her Theosophy devotees. The reality: she probably never left Western Europe.
In “Notes From a Séance,” Madame B. reigns supreme over a group of seekers who fall prey to fake spiritualists. Card readings and magic tricks along with sensual diversions are offered at Elysium, the ancestral home of The Professor, who is also the consort to Madam B.
We are let into this world through the letters-to-home penned by the Acolyte, a young upstart to the silkend matriarch. “Dearest Lita, it appears that in order to be truly liberated from one’s lower nature, one must first give into it completely. When I asked how this was to be achieved, I was shown a rather fascinating demonstration on the living room rug.”
What her letters – and this tongue-in-cheek drama – reveal is an idea as true today as 150 years ago: the charlatan leads because the fooled permit it.
The New York Times calls Notes from a Séance “quirky and sharp-witted.” Amidst hysteria and hypnotism, frauds and true-believers, Notes from a Séance is an otherworldly experience.
* The performance contains partial nudity.
