KEEP COMMUNITIES DANCING
We hope this 30-minute workshop inspires you to include dance as part of your everyday. At Shapiro & Smith Dance, the everyday gestures and meaningful movements of life fill our bodies when we’re on stage. Though we can’t be with you in person, we designed these videos as if you were in the studio with us. Follow along wherever you are.
If possible, view these videos in fullscreen mode on a display larger than a computer screen. Start seated in a comfortable, sturdy chair and have a few feet of open space in front of you.
welcome & thank you!
Artistic director and company co-founder Joanie Smith joins in conversation with artistic associate Laura Selle Virtucio to introduce Shapiro & Smith Dance to your community.
first, we warm up
Like professional athletes, dancers have to warm up their bodies before undertaking any rehearsal or performance. Laura leads us through some exercises to get our blood flowing and our energy rising for the meaningful movements to come.
gestures, movements, & meaning
Dance is expression and communication using the body and movements rather than words. At its most basic level, dance can be everyday gestures that are stylized and stretched to become more powerful and meaningful.
FERDOUGANAL, For us all
Here’s an opportunity to see one of our works on stage at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. We invite you to embody the movement yourselves in whatever way is comfortable and enjoyable for you.
